Dive Computers Explained: The Features That Actually Matter

A dive computer tracks your depth, time and the nitrogen your body has absorbed, then tells you how long you can stay and when to ascend. It is your most important piece of electronics underwater. The market is crowded with features, so here is what actually deserves your attention.

Readability comes first

If you cannot read it quickly, it is not helping. Look for a high-contrast display, large numbers, and a screen that works in low light and bright sun. Colour screens make menus and gas data easier to scan, but a clear monochrome display is perfectly fine.

Gas switching and air integration

  • Air or single gas: enough for most recreational diving.
  • Nitrox: almost every modern computer supports it, and it is worth having even if you do not use it yet.
  • Air integration shows tank pressure on the computer through a transmitter on your first stage. It reduces clutter, though you should still check your analogue pressure gauge.
  • Multi-gas and technical modes matter only if you plan technical diving.

Wrist, console or both

Wrist computers are compact and double as a watch. Console units are larger and easier to read at a glance. Many divers carry a wrist computer plus a backup.

Algorithm and conservatism

Different computers use different decompression algorithms and offer conservatism settings. You do not need to understand the maths, but you should know how to adjust the setting and choose a more cautious one if you are older, tired, cold, or diving repeatedly.

Battery and connectivity

User-replaceable batteries are convenient for travel. Rechargeable models are fine as long as you can top them up on a trip. Bluetooth lets you sync dives to your phone and update firmware.

Backup is part of the plan

Computers can fail. Carry a backup, or agree a conservative back-up plan with your buddy. Always read the manual before your first dive with a new unit.
